Trivia

The first synthetic dye was created by an 18-year-old British chemistry student, William Perkin, in 1856. Perkin, who was home from school for Easter, was trying to make quinine in his home lab but instead made a purple dye. With the financial backing of his parents, Perkin built a factory to make this dye and became successful and wealthy. The Germans used many of Perkin's ideas and techniques to build the world's first extensive chemical industry.

Serendipity

Although the scientific method is responsible for many great discoveries, serendipity also has played a part in the advancement of humankind's knowledge. Serendipity is an accidental, fortuitous discovery. For example, Teflon, microwave cooking, Post-it notes, and many other products and processes were discovered by accident; however, it takes a well-trained scientist, with an open and inquiring mind, to take full advantage of luck.
